What is Procure-to-pay?
Procure-to-pay (P2P) is the end-to-end buying process: requisition, approval, purchase order, receiving, invoice matching and payment.
In more detail
P2P runs from the moment an employee needs something to the moment the supplier is paid. Procurement owns the first half (sourcing, PO) and finance owns the second (match, pay). Gaps appear at the seam: invoices with no PO, receipts not logged, approvals stuck in someone's inbox. Spend visibility and payment timing both improve once the flow is consistent. Typical automation targets are requisition routing, PO creation, invoice capture and matching, and supplier onboarding checks. We usually start at the invoice, where the pain is most visible. Order-to-cash is the selling-side counterpart.
Example
An ops manager requests a laptop. The request routes by amount to the right approver, becomes a PO, is received by IT, and the supplier invoice matches and queues for the next payment run with no re-keying.
