What is Touchless invoice processing?

Touchless invoice processing means an invoice is captured, validated, matched, coded and posted for payment with no manual handling. It is straight-through processing applied to invoices.

In more detail

The touchless rate is the share of invoices that follow this path. Vendors quote high numbers, so ask how they count: whether an approve click counts as a touch, whether only PO invoices are included and over what period. Invoices on a clean PO with a matching receipt often go touchless. Non-PO invoices, price variances and new vendors usually do not. Pushing the rate up means loosening tolerances or auto-approving more, which raises the risk of paying wrong invoices. We set rules first for low-value, high-confidence cases and watch the error rate next to the touchless rate. A rate of 100 percent is neither a realistic nor a desirable target, and a monthly audit of a random sample keeps the rest honest.

Example

Of 2,000 invoices in a month, 1,100 are PO invoices that match within a 1 percent tolerance and post automatically. The touchless rate is 55 percent, and a finance lead audits a random 5 percent sample of those 1,100.
