UiPath vs Power Automate vs AI agents
UiPath and Power Automate both automate screens and systems with no API, and that is where RPA still wins. AI agents win where the work is reading and judging: emails, PDFs and decisions inside a policy. Power Automate is the lower-priced start for a Microsoft shop. Most mature setups keep a bot for the legacy screen and put an agent in front of it.
Vendor facts are from UiPath and Microsoft pages checked October 16, 2026.
UiPath, Power Automate and custom AI agents compared, as of October 2026
Both RPA vendors now sell AI and agent features, so the lines are blurring. This table compares each product's core strength and its published pricing. Prices are list prices from the vendor pages and may differ at checkout.
What it is
Sources2356- UiPath
- Describes itself as one platform for business orchestration and automation, bringing agents, robots and people together. Defines RPA as software robots for repetitive, rule-based tasks like data entry and system integration.
- Power Automate
- Microsoft's service for flows between apps (cloud flows) and for automating work on a computer, including legacy apps (desktop flows, its RPA).
- AI agents (custom-built)
- Software that uses a language model to read input, choose among a fixed set of actions and call your systems, with limits and approvals around it.
Strongest at
Sources35- UiPath
- Systems that lack APIs and structured screen steps. UiPath says RPA is valuable especially where systems lack APIs.
- Power Automate
- Flows across connected apps, plus desktop flows for legacy software such as terminal emulators, web and desktop apps and Excel.
- AI agents (custom-built)
- Emails, PDFs, scans and free text, and judgment calls within a policy you define.
How it reaches a system
Sources35- UiPath
- UI, API and AI-based integration. UiPath says a platform must support all three.
- Power Automate
- Connectors for cloud flows. Desktop flows interact through UI elements, images or coordinates.
- AI agents (custom-built)
- APIs and tools you expose to the model. Controlled browser steps where there is no API.
Published pricing
Sources14- UiPath
- Community is free. Basic starts at $25 a month. Standard and Enterprise are by quote, and Standard offers a 60-day trial. The page says an updated plan offering is coming soon.
- Power Automate
- Premium is $15 per user per month for attended RPA, cloud flows and process mining. Process is $150 per bot per month for unattended RPA. Hosted Process is $215 per bot per month. All billed yearly, with a 30-day trial. Microsoft says prices are for marketing purposes only.
- AI agents (custom-built)
- A build fee, then model usage per run, hosting and monitoring. Scenox does not publish prices. The cost guide below names the drivers.
Agent features from the vendor
Sources1267- UiPath
- Agents are listed on Standard and Enterprise. Bring-your-own model is listed on Enterprise. UiPath says sensitive data is masked before it reaches a model.
- Power Automate
- Copilot can help build flows if your organization has AI enabled. Copilot Studio agents use credit packs of 25,000 credits at $200 a pack a month, and an Azure subscription is required.
- AI agents (custom-built)
- This is the product. Quality depends on the test set, the rules around the model and the monitoring after launch.
What breaks it
Sources1- UiPath
- Screen changes, pop-ups, login changes and slow pages hit UI bots. UiPath lists self-healing UI automation on Enterprise.
- Power Automate
- The same screen-level changes affect desktop flows. Cloud flows break when a connected app changes.
- AI agents (custom-built)
- Unusual inputs, vague instructions and model updates. It can return a plausible wrong answer without an error.
Upkeep
- UiPath
- Fix scripts after UI changes, manage bot licenses and keep orchestration current.
- Power Automate
- Fix desktop flows after UI changes, and assign each flow an owner so failures are noticed.
- AI agents (custom-built)
- Re-run the test set when a model or instruction changes, and review a sample of live outputs.
Audit trail
Sources26- UiPath
- UiPath says every action and decision is captured in a business record.
- Power Automate
- Environments and security roles are managed in the Power Platform admin center.
- AI agents (custom-built)
- You design it: inputs, outputs, model version and the person who approved each action.

Which fits which job
Choose UiPath when…
You run, or plan to run, a large estate of bots and want one platform to orchestrate agents, robots and people.
- Many processes sit in legacy or desktop applications, and an automation team manages them centrally.
- You need the Enterprise-level features it lists, such as bring-your-own model, credential vaults and process monitoring.
- You can budget through a sales quote. Its Standard and Enterprise plans do not show a price.
Choose Power Automate when…
Your company runs on Microsoft 365 and you want to start small, with a published price per user or per bot.
- People in operations can build flows themselves, and IT wants them governed through the Power Platform admin center.
- A single user can start with attended desktop flows on Premium at $15 a month, as listed.
- The work is rule-based, such as copying data between a legacy app and Excel.
Choose AI agents when…
The hard part of the process is reading and deciding, not clicking.
- Input arrives as emails, PDFs and scans in many layouts, such as supplier invoices or claim packets.
- A person today reads each item to decide what to do, and a policy exists that can guide the decision.
- You need an approval step before anything is paid, sent or changed.
Combine them when…
A process needs an agent to read and a bot to key the result into an old screen. UiPath describes RPA as playing a complementary role beside AI agents in the same way.
- The agent extracts the data, checks it against rules and queues exceptions for a person.
- The existing bot keeps the data-entry step it already does reliably.
- Logging and approvals sit at the process level, so one case can be traced across both.
Limits of this comparison
- We compared published list prices. Real UiPath and Microsoft costs depend on licensing agreements and bundles, which we could not see.
- UiPath's pricing page shows no per-user or per-robot unit for Standard and Enterprise, so we could not compare it like for like with Power Automate's per-bot price.
- If your process is stable, rule-based and only needs clicks in an older app, an RPA tool is the right buy. An agent adds cost and testing you do not need.
- Agents are probabilistic. They need an evaluation set, confidence thresholds and human approval for consequential actions.
- We have not benchmarked reliability across these products on your screens or documents.
Where Scenox Studios fits
We build the agent layer: the reading, the checks and the approvals. Where an old application has no API, we pair the agent with controlled browser automation or an existing bot, and we say when a bot you already run should stay as it is.

Questions people ask
Is UiPath better than Power Automate?
Neither is better in general. UiPath is a dedicated automation platform sold by quote at the Standard and Enterprise levels. Power Automate sits in the Microsoft Power Platform with published prices, from $15 per user per month for attended automation. Choose by where your applications live, who will build the automations and how you want to buy. Prices are as of October 2026.
Will AI agents replace RPA?
Not entirely. Agents take over the reading and judging, which is where many RPA programs stall. RPA remains useful where a system has no API and the steps are stable. UiPath itself describes RPA as complementary to AI agents in the execution stack. Expect fewer bots doing narrower jobs.
Can an AI agent replace a UiPath bot?
For document and email handling, often yes: an agent can read the item and call an API directly, with no screen to scrape. For a legacy screen with no API, a bot, or controlled browser automation, is still the practical route. Replace a bot only after the agent passes a test on your real cases.
How much does Power Automate cost compared with UiPath?
Microsoft lists Premium at $15 per user per month, Process at $150 per bot per month and Hosted Process at $215 per bot per month, billed yearly. UiPath lists a free Community plan and Basic from $25 a month, with Standard and Enterprise by quote. The units differ, so price your own bot count and users with each vendor. Figures are from October 2026.
Can I use RPA and AI agents together?
Yes, and it is a common pattern. The agent reads and checks the input, then hands structured data to a bot or an API call that does the entry. Put logging and approvals at the process level so one person can trace a case across both.
