What is Conversational AI?

Conversational AI is technology that lets people interact with software in natural language, by text or voice, combining language understanding, dialogue management and connections to business systems.

AI and agents

In more detail

It is the umbrella over chatbots, voice agents and messaging assistants. Older versions matched keywords to scripted flows. Current ones use language models to understand intent, ask follow-up questions and call tools such as a booking system or an order lookup. What separates a useful deployment from a demo is the connection to real data and a clear handoff to a person. Measure it by containment, resolution and customer satisfaction, not by how natural it sounds. We scope conversational agents to a defined set of tasks, test them on real transcripts and route anything sensitive, such as complaints or refunds above a limit, to staff. The channel (web chat, WhatsApp, phone) changes the design more than the model does.

Example

A property manager's assistant answers tenant messages on WhatsApp. It checks the maintenance system and books a repair slot for routine issues. Anything mentioning a leak or no heating goes to the on-call coordinator with the conversation attached.
