What is Sales force automation?

Sales force automation (SFA) is software that automates a sales team's routine tasks, such as logging activities, tracking leads and opportunities, forecasting and generating quotes, usually as a core part of a CRM.

In more detail

SFA is the oldest layer of sales technology. It covers contact and account records, lead and opportunity tracking, activity logging, pipeline views, forecasts, quoting and task reminders. Modern CRMs such as Salesforce and HubSpot include it. The term appears more in enterprise software, while 'CRM' is the everyday word. The gap SFA leaves is the work between the records: researching an account, drafting the first email, updating fields after a call, chasing a stalled deal. That is where AI agents add value, writing back to the CRM after a rep approves. Reps abandon tools that add data entry, so measure adoption and not feature count. Clean the CRM data first, because any agent built on top inherits whatever is in it.

Example

A rep finishes a discovery call. The SFA layer logs the meeting on the opportunity, and an agent drafts the notes, updates the next-step and close-date fields and proposes a follow-up email for the rep to approve.
